A Practical Education Model for Social Change
raison d'être"There must exist a paradigm, a practical model for social change that includes an understanding of ways to transform consciousness that are linked to efforts to transform structures." - bell hooks
‘Learning’, like ‘Love’ and ‘Queer’, is an Action Word. It’s a fire we kindle together, gather and tend in community, and carry light and warmth where they’re needed.
Heartfire Learning offers community-based workshops, trainings, guest lectures, consultations, webinars, professional development, curriculum and conference design, strategic planning, and facilitated educational conversations on a wide array of topics connected to justice and injustice, healing and relationality, power and participation, identity and belonging, cultural humility and connection, gender and sexuality, relationships and intimacy, storytelling and changemaking, trauma and transformation.
Trauma simply means “damage that stays”. Our work aims to lead a more wholistic and integrated pedagogical paradigm on Turtle Island for understanding trauma in its full context: sociocultural, psychoemotional, intergenerational, relational, organizational, historical, structural, and systemic. We don’t see or Teach trauma as an individual experience, wound, or carried burden, but as something interconnected across bodies, families, workplaces, communities, institutions, histories, and systems. Transforming trauma in this way requires truth and accountability, compassion and repair, and collective responsibility.
